Riva Elegance Arrives in Mallorca
Mallorca’s iconic Hotel de Mar Gran Meliá, affectionately known as “the chocolate building” for its distinct brown cladding, stands as a beacon of Mediterranean modernism. Designed in 1964 by the renowned architect José Antonio Coderch, this adults-only retreat in Illetes has long embodied elegant restraint and thoughtful design. Today, it steps into a new era of luxury with the launch of the Riva Lounge, through a partnership with the legendary Italian yacht brand, Riva.

This new addition is more than a mere lounge; it’s a spatial celebration of craftsmanship and maritime legacy. Brand’s storied heritage, marked by the use of polished mahogany, ribbed maple wood, and gleaming stainless steel, finds architectural expression in a setting that reflects the same balance of sleek minimalism and sensual curves that defines their world-famous yachts.
The Lounge is a living homage to the Aquarama and Rivamare vessels, featuring signature design pieces like Aquarama seats, Aquariva lamps, and custom-crafted mahogany furnishings. These elements, framed by soft lighting and neutral tones, exude a refined luxury that resonates with the hotel’s mid-century spirit.

The space draws on both Italian glamour and Mediterranean serenity. The interior flows effortlessly into the expansive terrace, which opens onto panoramic views of Illetes Bay. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels welcome natural light, while the choice of materials: mahogany panelling, marine-inspired textiles, and brushed metal accents, anchors the space in an elegant, nautical aesthetic. The design allows guests to feel as though they are aboard a classic yacht, floating between the sea and sky. This fluidity, where boundaries between indoors and out dissolve, captures the essence of Mediterranean living, while remaining true to brand’s commitment to timeless elegance.

Within the lounge, a more intimate experience awaits in the Riva Privée, a private enclave reserved for exclusive gatherings. Here, the attention to detail intensifies: soft upholstery, precision joinery, and subtle lighting come together to create a discreet yet highly stylised environment. It’s a setting that speaks to a clientele who value both privacy and aesthetic rigor – ideal for VIP receptions or private celebrations.

The design narrative doesn’t end on land. The collaboration extends to the water with the Rivamare yacht experience, a luxurious charter available exclusively to guests of the hotel. The yacht mirrors the lounge’s atmosphere, offering polished mahogany decks, plush interiors, and bespoke service. This seamless integration of land and sea represents a holistic approach to hospitality – where design is not confined to static space, but becomes a journey. A sunset sail aboard the Rivamare is not just an excursion, but a continuation of the brand design ethos.

The Riva Lounge in Mallorca now joins a select circle of Destination spaces in Venice, Monte Carlo, Paris, and Jeddah. Yet unlike its urban counterparts, this lounge offers an immersive experience anchored in the quiet grandeur of the Mediterranean coastline. It is the first time brand’s distinctive aesthetic has found a permanent home within a Spanish hotel, and it redefines the relationship between place, brand, and design.
